After reading the article in today's Free Press, one can only wonder why, if Pat Hengges was so sure the new Director of Public Safety would have come out on top of a national search, one wasn't undertaken. This is an incredibly important and visible position for the City. It seems the prudent course of action would have been to conduct the search with the current director being the candidate to beat. The residents of this community, at a minimum, deserve this level of due diligence. I also don't understand why the city council didn't insist on a search. I'm hopeful the new director lives up to the hype but the method by which she gained her $130,000, + benefits, per year job, clouds her qualifications and calls into question the process used for filling high-level positions at the City.
